Beachglass
Beach glass in my garden in Solvang, CA.  Taken October 8, 2005.

At the beginning of this year I gave my website a huge facelift and re-structuring.  I have since adjusted it here and there as new ideas popped into my head and my work shifted from the design & illustration realm to the fine art realm.  I am currently working on a new round of significant revisions, which I need to do now that the majority of the last two month’s of work has been removed from my studio for shows.  Before this work could be seen through my online store, but I am now in the process of shifting everything to online portfolios, where they can remain regardless of whether or not they are being exhibited.  I am also going through my site and making sure the look is consistent throughout.  I am dropping a few pages, updating information and basically sweeping out any cobwebs that have formed ever since I did the big re-vamp.

I have not been able to work on anything creative for well over two weeks now, and it is beginning to make me feel antsy.  My priority this week has to be my website, as I leave Thursday to go see my girlfriend in NC, and with an ad coming out November 1st, all needs to be in place before I leave.  Hence this late night journal entry.  I have a feeling there will be a few more this week before I skip town.

This is all part of the deal of being an artist.  It begins with creation, and then moves into doing what I can to promote it, get is seen, create excitement, and ultimately – hopefully – generate sales.  I had a solid two months of just getting messy and building a collection of work, and the past few weeks have been much more about getting a show in place, hanging everything, and adjusting my website accordingly.  I am adding photography to my online store, so that has meant hours of formatting and uploading pictures.  It will be exciting to see what kind of response I get to them, but it is tedious work to get the new pages all up and running.

My brain is in "to do list" mode, and I feel this journal entry is a reflection of that.  It is funny how my writing flows in a much different voice when I am deep in my creative mode.  Right now I am humming along in administrative mode, so I feel the need to write about what I’ve done and what I need to do in order to stay in that mindset.  Not to mention I am exhausted and ready for bed, without much energy to ponder anything too profound or insightful.  I shall leave that to one of the experts…

"The stars are forth, the moon above the tops Of the snow-shining mountains–Beautiful! I linger yet with Nature, for the night Hath been to me a more familiar face Than that of man; and in her starry shade Of dim and solitary loveliness I learn’d the language of another world."

Good luck with your website updates Swirly! (… don’t forget to eat …) They can be so time-consuming, but isn’t it nice to do your own and have total creative control, too? When they’re all done, it will feel so good.
BTW, how about a link to your site on the sidebar of this blog (… don’t see one, unless I missed it).
Good luck with your shows, too!

I want to echo the idea of “don’t forget to eat.” And take time for yourself to breathe and sleep. It will all be worth it (I remind myself of this too as I am trying to get my website for my yoga business up and running).

wow you sound like me. Hey I am working on an editorial about artists…what kind of art do you do. I tried to figure out by your website but honestly I couldn’t Let me know it might help your promoting a bit??? only if you are intersted.
This stuff is all so hard its hard to balance being an artist with the promotion. Hope you get to take a deep breath soon

Have a great trip…is “NC” North Carolina or Northern California? :) Sounds like a getaway will be a nice transition after jamming on the admin stuff for awhile…

Great work-taking a much needed break should help. Sometimes stepping away puts things in perspective. I’m quite definite the site will look excellent. Cheers!
