Happy Christmas
December 24, 2005
All presents are wrapped.
The tree is twinkling.
There is wood in our fireplace, berries and poinsettias on our mantle.
Our refigerator is stocked, our pantry bursting.
There are bottles of champagne ready to be shared.
The sky outside is blue and birds are fluttering about.
Within hours our house will be filled with voices, packages, laughter and many hugs.
We will have to pull out fresh towels for everyone and assign sleeping quarters.
This evening an Italian feast awaits us, with plenty of pasta, olives and tomatoes.
All the preparations – all the shopping, the wrapping, the planning, the coordinating – are about to unfold.
But right now it is quiet. Right now it is still.
I feel warm. Calm. Thankful. Excited. Tired.
Mostly thankful.
