Postcards
A stack of inspiring creations.

I know what I’ll be doing Monday – SCANNING.  I have been in Solvang all week so have not been able to receive, scan & upload the 52 Figments postcards that have found their way to my mailbox in LA.  My fiancee returned from Tokyo this morning – arriving at LAX – and picked up the mail before heading up to Solvang, thereby bringing me a bag full of wonderful treats.  I am so eager to get them all online so everyone can enjoy these magnificent creations.

They are actually so small, these postcards, and so simple.  A piece of paper, some tape, a stamp and a glimpse into the dreams and passions of people from all over the world, most of whom I have never met and may never meet.  I receive some in envelopes with no return address and no discernible postmark, so I can’t even tell where in the world they are from.  Despite all the unknowns, I feel as if I am being given something precious from each of the senders, perhaps something that isn’t being shared with anyone else in the world.  That is the quirky thing about anonymity, that it is sometimes easier to share the deepest parts of our selves with people we don’t know.  Underneath the blanket of anonymity, we can be whoever we want to be and we can share whatever we want to share.  No one is participating in this project because of any material or financial gain or to fulfill any kind of expectations that anyone else might have.  Everyone involved is participating because they want to express something that is stirring inside of them, and I am thrilled and honored to be able to provide an outlet for all of these feelings, dreams, ideas, hopes and goals.  I consider every single postcard a gift and a declaration that is worthy of great care, attention and celebration.

I sincerely hope that by the end of the year the person delivering my mail knocks on my door and complains.  Not that I want to make his or her job more difficult or taxing, but because I want as many people as possible to feel not only inspired to answer the questions I put out there, but safe enough to answer them as boldly and honestly as possible.  Each postcard can be a light that is available to anyone who happens to stumble upon my website, and the simple truth is that any one of them can be the perfect antidote to someone else’s creative blocks, to someone else’s pain, to someone else’s darkness.   These postcards are not my creations, they are your creations, so any positive flow of energy that is created as a result of someone viewing these postcards is not my doing.  With 52 Figments, my goal is to play the role of the midwife, to pull out of anyone participating what is already there, waiting to come forth.  Beyond that, all I’m doing is uploading images and inviting people to come see them.  The work here is being done by everyone else, and I am the lucky one who gets to enjoy a special front row seat to all the artistry.

To all of you who have taken the time and energy to share your thoughts, your dreams and your realities, I salute you and I thank you.  To all of you who are just now discovering this, I implore you to let these creations inspire and delight you as they have me.  The best part about it:  it’s only just begun.

    Hi Christine!
I love this project and I think you’re a genius to have thought of such a way to receive such inspiring wonderful mail every day, and also to inspire others into thinking about big, fun questions and making art they wouldn’t otherwise think of making. And even though it’s easy enough to post art on one’s own sight, it’s so gratifying to see it on somebody else’s – and in the company of the art and words of so many kindred spirits! I’m looking forward to seeing MY first figment posted, and looking forward to doing more! Thanks for the inspiration!
