Really Good Roots
May 22, 2006
Detail of a creation by Sofia Rocha, my best buddy.
Scene: Christine and Sofia (7 years old) at an Italian restaurant in Santa Ynez, CA this weekend at a table with a white paper table covering. Christine and Sofia are sitting across from each other.
Christine pulls a pen out of her purse and draws a butterfly for Sofia. She draws the butterfly upside down from her perspective so it is right side up from Sofia’s perspective.
Sofia appears mildly impressed.
Christine then draws a tree the same way – upside down from her perspective so it is right side up from Sofia’s perspective.
Sofia, after carefully analyzing the drawing: "What about the roots?"
Christine reaches across the table and begins drawing roots at the bottom of the tree.
Sofia: "WOW! You do roots REALLY GOOD!"

Sweet scene and nice metaphor! I’ve always loved the quote about roots & wings. Congrats on your own newly established roots. Hope you’re loving it!
How cute!
i love this story my dear. children remind us of who we are sometimes don’t they?
Ditto Laini– roots and wings– who needs dreams when we have children to open our eyes?
deeevine.
roots are important.

Well, details are important!! Lovely story
This is great! I love what children bring to our attention!
What a cute and awakening story. I love how obvious kids are (and how much we seem to miss these things)…
that’s true my dear! children are the smartest creatures alive and this one definitely sees the truth of you…
Mm. Roots. . .
From the mouths of babes…
