Quarantine

November 29, 2010

[Photo taken in Big Sur earlier this month by my husband.]

For a long time now I’ve prided myself on how rarely I get sick. I’ve had unexplainable health issues that drag on for months and at one time required surgery, but a common cold? The flu? HA! I’d laugh in the face of germs, viruses, and all such annoyances that require boxes of tissues, decongestants, and anti-biotics. Whenever conversations arise about how sick someone is or has been in recent months, I’d raise my chin up ever so slightly and casually remark, “Oh that’s a bummer. Me? I never get sick – haven’t been sick in years!”

Chin pointed slightly downward:  Who’s laughing now, Miss Smartypants?

Indeed, I am a full week into who knows what, having gone through boxes and packs of tissues, bags of Ricola drops, and too many over the counter remedies to count, and I feel nowhere near getting rid of whatever bug has lodged itself into my skin than I did a week ago when I felt it coming on. See, my strategy has always been simple and straightforward – the instant I feel something coming on, cancel all appointments and hit the couch. Within 24 hours I feel right as rain, having scurried the little bug off somewhere else. I attempted to stick to this routine last week, but this bug is a stubborn one, and in less than 24 hours I went from feeling a slight something in my throat to barely being able to talk or swallow. And while I’ve felt better these past five days than I did the first two, whatever this is doesn’t look to be going anywhere soon.

So I am officially in quarantine, and have to reserve most of my strength to attend to Miss Tilda, who, at this exact moment, is sitting next to me moaning and groaning and pawing at me. I am beginning to learn what her different whines mean, and this one is “Play with me! Play with me! Play with me noooooooooooowwwwwwwww!” I therefore must end this entry, go park myself on the floor and try to run her around the room by making her chase a tennis ball.

Until my next entry, please send healthy vibes my way!

Poor love! I’ve had the sore throat for the past two days and I think it’s because I drank too much wine on Saturday night! Scratchy…
Chinese herbs and this terrible Osha root tincture one of my wild women sent me seems to be keeping it from getting worse. I’m with you, sister. As I sit here cutting out construction paper Christmas trees by the hundreds…xo *sniff*

sending healthy vibes your way. get an empty pop bottle and stick some treats in it and watch how much fun it is and how long it occupies time. not for you! for tilda! ha! take care! tea and honey – in buckets always seems to help me…ciao!

Feel well soon! Like you, I never get sick either. Really. Nor do my kids. We are fortunate that way I guess.
So I guess you saved up all your sick time for one big blow out!!! Get well soon. xoxo

I have experience with this. I also never get sick. I do, however, get throat crud that coincides either with an allergy when something blooms in March, or with the week we turn on the heat. It is unbelievably miserable to get rid of.

The only thing that has worked for me is acupuncture (for the allergy and the throat discomfort) and a humidifier in the bedroom whenever the heat is on.

    Good luck!

Yuck. Being sick sucks, even if it’s “just” a cold. I’m the same way–mysterious illnesses requiring specialists and scary (fortunately mis-) diagnoses, yes, but colds and flus, not really. That’s why it really kicks your butt when you actually get one! I hope you are feeling better… NOW! The days–and nights, especially–feel oh so long when you’re ill.
Another Tilda tip (courtesy of my friend who used to have a Golden Retriever and her two VERY RAMBUNCTIOUS puppies): take a clean Kong (I’m sure you have one), tuck some little treats inside, seal them inside with a plug of peanut butter and throw it in the freezer to set. It won’t take Tilda long to lick away the frozen PB to get the treats, but it’ll buy you 10-20 minutes and sometimes that may be all you need to maintain your sanity (or chase down another box of tissues). Feel BETTER!

  12. christine,

i felt something serious coming on last week — sore throat, achey and low energy. a friend recommended “yin chiao”. went out that night to get some at whole foods. took it for a couple days, and nipped that sickness in the bud. totally fine.

just wanted to pass it along for the next time … if there is a next time!

hope you’re up and at ‘em soon.

    xh
