I’m not kidding ~ reading Rama Hughes’s essay on art and education made me weepy.

Hello Christine- Having been a educator for the past 15 years for a variety of ages from Kindergarten, to college-age students, to working adults the number one hurdle to jump over is the misperception that art is decoration or a luxury of time only for the rich folks that can afford it. At times, even I believed this and left my art practice for doing something “useful”. And yet, so many people tell me that they wish they could have more art/creativity in their life. There is this push-pull to pay the bills and live the life I need to live as an artist. I do believe this is a BIG issue and one I want to think more and act more about as I proceed in the future as an educator and artist advocating for the arts every day. Thanks for posting the article.
